Through the Looking (3-D) Glasses

Never a big fan of putting 3-D glasses over my everyday glasses, I decided to brave the nausea to watch the most awesome movie ever….or not. On January 1st, I thought I’d get to the AMC early and beat all the teeny boppers on winter vacation to see Avatar, a movie recommended by several co-workers, “The story line is meh, but the special effects are so awesome!” I thought my front and center seating was pretty awesome until about 20 minutes into the movie. I started to get a headache and get very dizzy and hot. My stomach made swishing noises and it was only moments away from setting off a boatload of vomit. I spent nearly two hours clawing into the handles of my seat, praying for the credit to come soon. With the crowd of people that seated themselves on both sides of me, taking up the whole row, there was no way I was going to leave the theater without ruining someone else’s awesome Avatar experience. And if the 3-D glasses wasn’t going to make me vomit, the storyline sure was. A mix of Fern Gully and Pocahontas (And Dances with Wolves I’m told), the story didn’t really say anything new or impacting. And although some of the 3-D special effects were cool, I’m not sure it was worth the $20 and buckets of vomit after.

So that brings me to my next thought: Alice in Wonderland. Should I try wearing the 3-D glasses again and see the wonderful world of Tim Burton in 3-D? Tempting. But right now, I’m going to pass. I’m not sure what it is with the latest craze in movies in 3-D, seems like now there is always at least one movie in the theaters that is in 3-D: Coraline, UP, Avatar and now Alice in Wonderland. I enjoy a good underwater IMAX movie in 3-D, but I don’t think all of our films need to follow this trend (and don’t even get me started on the TVs!).
